Basics of On-page SEO

Having a good looking website is merely the start of a digital marketing campaign.  Good design is integral to the user experience but there are technical elements that the public doesn’t see but that Google wants to see in order to achieve the rankings you want.  These are the basics of on-page SEO that need to be right in order to help you get that first page result.

Use SEO-Friendly URLs

Google has stated that the first 3-5 words in a URL are what they are interested in.  Content management systems, like WordPress have their default URL setting, either to a “date /page title” or to something worse “yoururl.com/p-135”.  You can easily change this in the settings tab.

Use Proper Titles

Put your keywords at the beginning of the page title while making the title short and direct.  Your title tag is one of the most important on-page factors.  Make sure that your title is wrapped in an <h1> tag and that it is the only <h1> tag on your page.

Impress with Multimedia

Text is important but it only goes so far in engaging your visitors so break the content up with videos, images and diagrams to increase the time your visitors spend on the site.  Media also helps increase your social shares getting your web site in front of even more potential customers.  Here’s a video detailing the basics of on-page SEO.

Put Your Subheadings in H2 Tags

This serves two purposes, the first is it breaks up your content into manageable chunks that can be easily digested.  The second is it allows you highlight your keywords again.  You should also incorporate your keywords into an <h2> tag at least once throughout your article, be very careful not to overuse your keywords.

Include Your Keywords in the First Paragraph

This is something that should happen naturally, instead of a long drawn out introductory paragraph, get to the point and that will include your keywords.  It tells the reader right away what your page is about.

Use Responsive Design

If your site isn’t mobile friendly yet, it is time to upgrade.  Mobilegeddon in 2015 showed that Google doesn’t look favorably on websites that aren’t mobile friendly and they aren’t likely to change that position.

Use Link to Other Sites and Other Pages

Links to other sites within your niche help Google understand what your site is all about, it also shows that you are part of the community and you provide a hub of quality information.  Linking to other pages within your site is SEO gold, Wikipedia has mastered the technique.  Remember you are not Wikipedia and every other word shouldn’t be an internal link but 2-5 is perfectly acceptable.

Make Your Site Faster

Google has said often enough that site speed is a ranking factor, there are several ways your developer can boost your site speed.  It shouldn’t take more than 4 seconds to load or your traffic is gone.

These are the basics of on-page SEO, master these first and you’re halfway to that coveted first spot.
